How to Use Clipping Masks in Krita

Krita: Inherit Alpha, Clipping Mask for Shading and Lighting Technique (2025)

Share
The three steps to create lighting and shading using clipping masks and blend modes in Krita: first create a flat base color layer, then a shading layer with a grey brush over the shaded areas, and a lighting layer with the a grey brush over the highlighted areas, then set the shading to multiply blend mode and lighting to addition blend mode. By default, they will affect the background as well, so place all 3 layers in a group and make both shading and lighting inherit the alpha of the base color layer.

Description

A simple technique to separate shading and lighting into separate layers using clipping masks in illustrations software in general, and "Inherit Alpha" in Krita specifically.
