What are File and Folder Permissions?

File and folder permissions are permissions set on files and folders that can allow or deny users to access certain files in a computer via programs running in an operating system (Windows, macOS, Linux, etc.), such as forbidding a user from read or open files, modify, edit or overwrite files, rename files, delete files, or create files.
