What is Swiggle?

Swiggle (swiggle.org.uk) is a free search engine website that is powered by Google for searching the web that attempts to be child-safe.

Notable Features

Swiggle adds some features on top of the features that Google provides:

Safe search: as a child-safe search engine, Swiggle has safe search enable by default with no way to disable it.

Censored words: Swiggle won't even try to search for words it deems unsafe.

Observations

Blacklist-based approach: Swiggle seems to use blacklisting to remove unsafe websites from the results it gets from Google. Personally, I think this isn't a very good approach, and I'd recommend using Kiddle instead. For an example of its shortcomings: Swiggle won't show results from Instagram, likely because it's blacklisted for being unsafe for children, but it will show results from TikTok, likely because that's a newer social media that hasn't been blacklisted yet.
