There are many bad things happening on the world. A man asks for help somewhere. SuperHero, with his superhearing, hears his plea even though he's in a different continent. SuperHero uses his superflight to quickly fly around the planet to where the man is. SuperHero uses his superstrength to solve all the man's problems. SuperHero saves the day!
There are many bad things happening on the world. A man posts for help on social media, or a news organization shares a story about it. You, through your feed, see the post. You do not possess the superflight to go where the man is. You do not possess the superstrength to solve the man's problems. The man's plea for help will haunt you in your sleep.
Imagine a comic character like our SuperHero, who could always hear when someone needed helped, no matter where that person was in the world, however, this character didn't possess the ability to help anyone—no superflight, no superstrength—only the ability to hear their pleas. Would you call such a character a superhero? He would wake up every day and just hear about people's misery, powerless to help and unable to plug his ears to ignore them.
That would be a tragedy.
The printing press, the TV, the Internet, and now the social media have granted us the ability to be aware of everything bad happening anywhere in the world all the time. We have superhearing, but none of these mass media technologies have granted us actionable powers to match it. We can share things now, make noise—supernoise—but it isn't the same thing.
Just as it would be unfair to expect our tragic comic character to act as a superhero just because of his superhearing, it makes no sense whatsoever to expect average people to help everyone on the planet just because they're forced to be aware of everything bad happening all the time.
What do they expect from us? What do they want us to do about it?
We're not superheroes. Don't expect that from us! We just have Internet.
Alas, not everything is hopeless. You can't save the world, but you can still make it a better place, even with your feeble average human strength. You don't need superflight to do that. I'm sure that, if you look around, you'll find many people in your town that you could help with the powers that you currently possess if you wanted to. Perhaps your neighbors need help, perhaps your family or friends. You can't be a superhero, but if you want, you can still be somebody's hero.
